Valentines: Lock Heart by StressedJenny Valentines: Lock Heart by StressedJenny
My submission for Valentines this year, even though I took this photo last February, I thought they would make a lovely valentines photo, but it had past. So here it is for this year ^__^

These photo's were taken in Paris, on the Pont des Arts near the Louvre. There is a lovely tradition where lovers take a lock and attatch it to the bridge, sealing their love inside it. They throw the key into the river below so their love will never be undone. Its such a lovely idea. Such a strong symbol of affection and devotion.

Sadly I think all of these locks were removed a few months after I took this. Apparently they were an eyesore. I was rather outraged by the idea of them being removed.

There were so many, but I especially liked the ones which were customised with hearts.

I'm quite certain it's because after so many, the locks add too much weight to the bridges, and it becomes an issue of safety. That's what I remember hearing a while ago when I first learned of this lovely tradition. Even if they're removed, still so much nicer than people carving their initials into poor trees! I love how you set these into white frames and kept the same lighting for each lock photo.

Aww as if they removed the locks. I find it so romantic. They shouldn't remove peoples' love.

well that's sad.

i wonder which couples are still together and which have gone and shared the same fates as their locks.

OH!
NOW I get why there are so many padlocks on the bridge in Cologne I always pass by train. Now it all makes sense xD

they do this in Lithuania! On just about every bridge, there will be HUNDREDS of locks. The man will also carry across his bride to represent his devotion and protection.

So cute. <3 ^_^

They're not removed at all. Now and then, they just suppress some of them to make sure the bridge doesn't get too heavy (and it allows new couples to put their lock too).

The officials don't mind; they're aware of it as tradition and respect it. (Even in the places where they're removed for too much weight on the bridge)

This is such a beautiful idea, as well as a gorgeous photo. My boyfriend saw this picture and decided to surprise me by doing this for Valentines Day at the bridge over the waterfall where we sent quite alot of time together last summer. Thank you so much for posting this picture, without it I probably would have just gotten a teddy bear for Valentines Day xD It is a shame that they took them all down, though.

I was just there a couple of months ago. I believe they remove the locks simply due to the sheer volume.

Thought this may be the overly romantisized viewpoint, try and think of it as them wanting to showcase the new love while the cut locks fall into memory at the base of the river. Generations of couples progressing forward through time.

It's a tradition based on a book called "A Tres Metros Sobre El Cielo" ("Three Meters Above Heaven") from the italian writer Federico Moccia whose characters do the same thing. It's the same in Barcelona's and Italy's bridges =) It's very cute. Nice pics, love them.

there's certain places where they allow the locks to remain, like 'lovelock' arizona I think, and a place in china where this tradition started. I plan on doing this when I get married. <3

What's up with true love's locks being an eyesore? I think it's a sweet idea and it would be a very different tourist attraction too :) I think removing them is a shame and mostly a mock to the couples, who've put their own special locks there o
I would be mostly delighted if something like this existed where I live

>< What the heck is wrong with those people??? These locks could have become a big part of Paris's history, and they had to go along and ruin it!
I thought Paris was supposed to be the city of love?

But anyways, aside from the removal of the locks, it a beautiful picture and concept. Maybe I'll make my lover do this for me this Valentines. XD
