Selkies are deadly to those who invade their territory or try to hunt their pups. It has been said that the songs of a selkie in battle have the mesmerizing and terrifying quality of a haka ( [link] ); and yet some survivors tell of a selkie's laugh, which has never been heard above the waves. It is a quiet laugh, soundless and silent, yet no less of a deadly threat.
