Bobby Ray was drunk, as usual in margaritavill, staggering, as was his custom, to sleep it off on the beach. As he approached, he realized that he had forgotten his towel, but could barely stand to go back, but then he saw an abandoned, furry towel already there. He thought he could make out a naked gal aways out in the surf, but that was not unusual around here. So he plopped down on the skin and fell asleep. A few hours later, a he awoke staring into the eyes of the strangest beauty he had ever seen. She had a look on her face that was somewhere between amusment and annoyance. She was naked, and compleatly nonchalant and indifferent about it, more so than any of the usual beach girls gone wild, who tended to be self consciously exibitionistic, a werid kind of reverse modesty that seemed to demand from men to stare at their shamelessness, and most shallow horndogs were willing to oblige, but not Bobby. He found such women as boring and empty as a blow up doll. At a loss for words, he offered her the remains of his drink. She smiled and declined, "No, t'ank 'ou", she said in the strangst accent he had ever heard, somwhere between Jamaican and Scottish. She sighed, saying, "Och, w'll, t'ibe need frsh hume' 'lood. And before he said a word, she was on him, and they began to make love: not merely casual sex, but really LOVE. To his astonishment, he realized that he actually LOVED this strange woman, and her he, as if they had known each other for years, yet he did not even know her name! Was he going insane?? He found, to more astonishment, that he did not care, that the old cynicisim in his heart had died, and been replaced with a joy he had never known possible. He felt like anything was possible, that with her at his side, he could move worlds! Finally, utterly satisfied, they fell asleep together. After awhile, he stired, and heard a large crowd approching, in a panic he pulled his trunks back on, then tossed the furry towel on her, as they passed, giving him annoying, knowing looks. When they had gone, he turned to her, and was shocked to see her crying in misery. He reached for her, but she pulled back, sqeezing the "towel" and glaring at him with fury. He saw her teeth were sharp, like a dog, and wondered if she would bite him. Utterly bewildered, he fell to his knees, stairing up at her. She glowered down at him, but her snarl slowly faded into a pondering scowl. Then she began to weep again, a look of sad compassion on her face. "I fo'giv ya", she said sorrowfully, "yo don' ken de' ruls, yo don' ken nuttin'. I'sa gotta go now, bu' I be back seben yar wit chil, den gib yo secon chans. Til den, yo wait, an ken yo'sel 'bout SELKIE." She then ran into the sea without another word. Bobby staired after her, and saw a seal swimming away. He never touched another woman, and spent the next seven years learning about selkies as he waited for his nameless wife to return with his child.
