Bayou Arcana step by step. by StressedJenny Bayou Arcana step by step. by StressedJenny
So while working on The 'Skeeter for Bayou Arcana, I really wanted to show you the process behind how I would put a page together, so here is page two in nice simple chunks.
I've made it look a lot easier than it is. There is a lot of time spent on planning and faffing around, getting in the right mood to draw.
I'd spend about a day drawing a page, but because it was only tackled in the evenings, I'd spend about a week and a bit on each page from start to finish. Not to say it was that linear. To keep things consistent I'd draw all the pages first, then scan them all together, layout and then colour. I was fortunate to have some comic paper with the page guides printed on it so I could work traditionally straight onto the paper, and there are plenty of places online where you can download guides.

I traditionally use a lot of gradients for highlighting characters when I colour but wanted to keep it simple because of time restraints, so coloured this comic differently compared to how I'd usually work, and I really liked it. The characters stayed completely flat, while detail and shading was applied to only the background layer.
This meant I'd have 3 levels at the most for colouring;
Characters,
Background,
Lighting Effects.

I think my favourite stage was the layout and adding the dialougue, This was the stage where it all came together and started to look complete. ^__^

Hope it interests you. I just wish these stages were that simple, haha!

Check my journal for details on release dates for Bayou Arcana and where to order ^__^

Ooooo I love seeing this kind of stuff! Step-by-steps are always fascinating to me and even more so when the painting/artwork is this beautiful! The detail work is impressive on it's own but to have that much there on top of it being a comic page is amazing.

Oh, neat how you make the background sort of continuous. Puts a nice sense of flow to it.

By black coloring pencil do you mean graphite/charcoal or something else?

:iconstressedjenny:

Nope, a faber castel black colouring pencil, it's just the right amount of softness to leave a dark smooth line and it doesn't smudge easily.

Wow, that is really helpful and informative. Thanks for this great reference material. Great work too.

I feel kinda bad that so much of the great drawings and colorings get covered up by the dialogue boxes. It's a shame.

So the first picture is hand drawn on real paper?
That will be worth a fortune one day make sure you sign it and keep it safe.

Oh man I hate that part, thee getting in the mood. Every time I pick up a pencil its like blah
And then once the mood strikes you have nothing around to draw with. I don.t know if that ever happens to you but it happens to me a lot. Oh and I love your creepy little racoon.

It's diffent everytime. I usually do, but I could afford to thumb say about six pages and then start, then do the last six. I liked to get approval on the thumbs before inking so that was an incentive to do a bulk of thumbs in one go.

This comic was "inked" with black colored pencil? O_O; How do you avoid smudging it?

Its a very good pencil. It does smudge, but you'd have to wipe it really hard.

Good lordy lordy lord, man. How long does it take you to do a page in general? Really, I could tell one has to have a grand load of patience to do all of this!
Beautiful work!

That is incredible. So much detail and work in about three days time. Many artists would KILL for that type of patience, especially when doing digital work.
I wish you grand luck with Bayou Arcana and know it's going to be fantastical, dude. Don't let anything get ya down. C:

My only problem with the finished product (and note this is not a slur on the writers in the slightest) is all the textboxes covering up all the pretty pictures! lol

I mean, i just like the style of all that greenery!

Oh and I've never commented before for you, 'cause I just fave then run. 8D But now I will, and may I just say... ILOVEYOURARTSOMUCH. I wish you would draw more Selkie ladies. You draw them so beautifully, and Elle and Mias are adorable and I want to snuggle them! Though with Elle I'll just bend down a wee bit and snuggle her boobs. Mias will kill me but it would be worth it. <3
